Rocco was still hesitant, but how could he say no to Cam? He couldn’t. That was the answer.

It looked like he was going to move back into his bedroom after all.

In the meantime, though, he made sure that Cam was eating. Cam rolled his eyes at him a few times, but he didn’t say anything about it, and Rocco settled down. The change in his mate over the past few days had been dramatic, and he couldn’t deny that moving Cam out of the infirmary had been a good idea.

Cam was starting to live again. Rocco suspected that shifting had had a lot to do with it, but he hadn’t asked, and Cam hadn’t volunteered information. Rocco wasn’t sure what had happened that day. They shifted, then cuddled on the bed together, but they hadn’t talked. Apparently, they hadn’t needed to talk. Cam was healing on his own, which was what Rocco had wanted. He’d been afraid he wouldn’t be able to do anything more, but that didn’t seem to matter. Cam had taken things into his own hands, and Rocco couldn’t have been happier.

He wasn’t sure how things would work between the two of them now that they were sharing a bed, but it was time to discover that. It wasn’t bedtime yet, but it would be soon, and Rocco was nervous. He didn’t know what to expect, but he wanted to make Cam happy.

“Have you been thinking about what’s next for you?” Rocco asked. He didn’t want to push, but he wanted to know if Cam wanted to include him in his future. It sounded like he did, but Rocco needed to be sure.

Cam frowned and blinked at him. “Next?”

“You know. Once you’re well enough to leave your bed. I mean, no one will kick you out of the warehouse. You can stay, and I hope you will. What did you want to do with your life before you were taken, though?”

Cam frowned. “Can I be honest with you?”

“Of course you can. I always want you to be honest with me.”

Cam nodded. “All right. Then I can tell you that I’m terrified.”

Rocco wasn’t surprised. He could remember all too well when he’d escaped from the lab. He’d had such a hard time trusting people, and he’d been terrified he would be taken again. “You know we’ll protect you,” he said.

Cam shrugged. “I know. You, Ox, and everyone else. You won’t allow anything to happen to me. I’m aware of that. The fear I feel doesn’t have logic. It’s just way too easy for me to imagine what would happen if the scientists got their hands on me again.”

Rocco’s hands tightened into fists. He wanted to find the people who’d hurt Cam and beat them into a pulp. He wanted them to hurt as much as they’d hurt Cam. He wanted to fix things for his mate, but he was starting to realize that he couldn’t. No matter how much he wanted to, Cam was the one who had to make decisions, and he was the one who had to work on his fear.
